New Bush and Beach: Addo Elephant Park to Plettenberg Bay
Aug 4 -12, 2025 (Small group)
Along the Eastern Cape of South Africa, from Port Elizabeth to Addo, the Garden Route, Plettenberg Bay and George, you will revel in our new 5-Star Bush and Beach Safari that is like no other! From monkeys to meerkats, whales to dolphins, lions to leopards, each day will leave you in awe and wonder. Together, we explore the majesty of South Africa on our new luxury safari, which takes us from deep in the bush to the wild beaches of the Indian Ocean. You may have visited SA before, but perhaps not these regions with such vast diversity and natural beauty in its purest form. You’ll be pampered throughout in our award-winning lodges with world-class service and gourmet cuisines with the finest wines.
We start at the UNESCO site of Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape, home to the densest population of elephants on earth. On this adventure, we follow the ancient forest paths trodden by elephants for centuries.
You’ll love the deluxe Gorah Elephant Camp—a 5000-hectare private preserve, the only camp in Addo and reserved entirely for us. The whole camp captures the romantic mystique from the 1900s and Hemingway style reminiscent of a bygone era. At this unfenced camp, we can witness elephants come to us – drawn to our waterhole. Watch them lumber down to drink as we relax on the veranda of our historic manor house. Wild game of all sizes come to drink as we sit back and become part of their natural routine. It’s authentic. It’s wild!
Our expert Rangers lead us on walking safaris. On foot, you really feel a part of this African ecosystem. On both morning and evening Game Drives, we’ll go in search of rhinos, meerkats, zebra, giraffe jackals, hyenas, and the Big Five! Each of our intimate tented suites at Gorah with thatched canopies have private decks overlooking the savannah. They take Glamping up a notch, including the finest amenities such as bathrobes and a bottle of sherry. All meals are included. Exquisite dining is by candlelight with silver service and crystal, harkening back to the Golden Era of African exploration.
We move from Bush to Beach along spectacular Plettenberg Bay, the adventure capital set on the Indian Ocean. You’ll love our Marine Safari. This is home to the southern right whale, humpbacks and an array of marine species, from penguins to octopuses. Here, near the ocean’s edge, we will visit Jakuni Wildlife Sanctuary, Monkeyland and time-permitting Birds of Eden – all with amazing tributes to conservation efforts. We’ll meet big cats and delightful primates who have been rescued. Opportunities abound for giraffe tracking, cultural visits, and walking trails at Featherbed Nature Reserve on the private Knysna Lagoon. Try ziplining or sea kayaking, even a swim with seals!
Our home here is the incomparable Tsala Treetops! You’ll get celebrity treatment at this uniquely elegant estate perched in the forest canopy. Imagine – your own large open suite with private deck, infinity pool, fireplace and footed bathtub, high above the ground amidst the forest. It’s simply breathtaking and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience lavish extravagance in the spirit of Africa.
Whether you are an AFS Afriholic or first-timer to Africa, you’ll love this unique adventure – It’s two trips in one! August is the perfect time to witness the whale migration with average temps of 60°. Air is easy. There’s no prep, no visa, and no worries as we traverse these malaria-free zones for the perfect African experience.
This luxury bush and beach combo is for a privileged small group of just 21 guests. Africa truly changes you forever – it’s a place where everything is magnified. Come be changed by the thrill of these discoveries which will linger on long after this unique vacation creation.

All flights to South Africa from the U.S. are overnight. Please book your flight so that you will arrive in Port Elizabeth on August 5 for the beginning of our Land portion of the Trip. Some may want to fly in a few days early to explore this beautiful region.
August 5 – Welcome to the Eastern Cape of South Africa!
Arrive in Port Elizabeth, also known as the Friendly City, just a 1h 45 minute flight from Johannesburg. Port Elizabeth is the gateway to the beautiful Garden Route of South Africa, known for its incredible wildlife, indigenous forests, lakes, rivers, and beaches.
Upon arrival, we’ll head directly to The Hotel Paxton, which is conveniently situated close to the airport, restaurants, Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Complex and many prime beaches. For those arriving earlier, Port Elizabeth has a few incredible activities that can be pre-booked. They include a Giraffe Tracking safari on a 2500-hectare private game reserve, a Cape Buffalo encounter for a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the management of these iconic animals, or a Marine Eco Safari to the Cape Recife reserve for an array of possible sitings of whales and bottlenose dolphin as well as some extraordinary birding.
This evening, we will meet up for a briefing about our upcoming adventure and a chance to get to know your fellow travelers. Your time is your own to enjoy any of the nearby restaurants, explore or rest.
Overnight: Paxton Hotel (1 night) The Hotel is conveniently situated at the airport, restaurants, The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Complex and many beautiful beaches.
August 6 – Gorah Elephant Camp, Addo Elephant National Park BLD
Today, we have a short drive to the Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa’s third largest national park, known for its large herds of elephants. This finely-tuned ecosystem provides a sanctuary to incredible numbers of elephant, lion, buffalo, black rhino, spotted hyena, leopard, antelope, zebra and over 400 bird species. This unique park is the world’s only park with the ‘Big 7’ – the Big 5 plus the southern right whale and great white shark off the coast of the Algoa Bay.
Our home is the Gorah Elephant Camp situated in a private concession in the heart of Addo. This unfenced tented safari camp offers one a glimpse into a bygone era of authentic safari of centuries past – the awesome natural world of Africa merged with colonial nostalgia and modern sophistication to deliver an unforgettably unique 5-star adventure.
The incomparable thrill of quietly observing a passing herd of elephant while being served tea on the verandah of a stately Colonial manor house is the stuff of dreams and legends. At Gorah it’s an everyday occurrence.
We’ll arrive in time for lunch and have time to relax or lounge by the pool before High Tea at 3:30pm. When the sun sets, the predators are actively searching for their prey. Evening game drives are always special. We head in our safari vehicles for an afternoon game drive in search of wildlife, returning around 8 pm for dinner. Dinners at Gorah are a complete treat, where candle-lit corners with warm fires and paraffin lanterns create an atmosphere of romance throughout the entire house. Estate wines carefully chosen to elevate the meal, and a good selection of international beverages enhance the dining experience. Of course, there will also be decadent desserts!
Overnight: Gorah Elephant Camp (3 Nights)
Our Luxury Tents are spacious tents that recall the golden era of safari in the early 1900s. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with shower, an interior relaxation area and a private deck offering panoramic views across the savannah plains. Hairdryer, personal in-room safe, bathrobes, slippers, bespoke body products, umbrellas, complimentary sherry in the room. The plush interior of the tent is enhanced through the simplicity and authenticity of solar power lighting and ceiling fans. The en suite bathroom with bespoke vanities and shower is discreetly situated to allow for complete privacy. To complete the experience, the tented suite invites you to completely relax and unwind with a book on the comfy couch or take an afternoon nap on the king-size bed, with 300-count cotton sheets enveloping you and sending you to dreamland.
August 7 –Safari Time in Addo National Park, Gorah Elephant Camp BLD
Today is all about the game! A typical day on safari at Gorah is relaxed with no rushing. We’ll awake by 7:30 and head out on a morning game drive after breakfast. Our passionate and professional guides will intrepidly search the vast terrain for animals in their natural habitat. We’ll spend our day in the company of large herds of elephants, experiencing the grace with which they move and witnessing the social family interactions between the herds.
Return for lunch on the verandah of the Manor House as we dine while watching the game come to drink at the waterhole. High tea is again a must-experience before we head out again on an afternoon drive.
Tonight, experience an exquisite dinner like no other under the stars in the outdoor Boma, listening to the sounds of the night.
Overnight: Gorah Elephant Camp
August 8 – Bushwalking, Meerkats, Game Drives BLD
Today, we have the opportunity to walk in the wild! We can walk out into the bush with our experienced rangers ( 6 guests at a time with 2 rangers), following the ancient paths trodden over time. This offers an incredible experience to understand better the fauna and flora of the ecosystem and learn about small creatures, including the “small 5” – the leopard tortoise, elephant shrew, buffalo weaver, ant lion and rhino beetle. This is not a strenuous walk but gives you the opportunity to breathe in the bush air, listen to the sounds of nature and awaken your senses. (Despite the low level of walking, there is a policy that those over 65 years old require a letter of medical fitness. Walks are totally weather-dependent and last for two hours. We can arrange several walks throughout the day.)
Today we also have the chance to get up close and personal with the delightful meerkats. The Meerkat Experience is only 6 guests per trip, and this can be done on the morning game drive. Potentially there are 2 den sites that could be used but this is not guaranteed on the sightings as the meerkats do move if there has been rain. Chances are great as we are visiting in the dry season.
After a wonderful Gorah lunch you can choose to sit on the verandah and let the game come to you, then go out with your rangers on another game drive experience or relax by the pool.
The lodge is exclusively ours so the lodge management will ensure that everyone gets split to enable them to do whichever activities they prefer.
Overnight: Gorah Elephant Camp
August 9 – Monkeys, Big Cats and Treehouses- Tsala Treetop Lodge, Plettenberg Bay B
After breakfast today, we make our way to the seaside town of Plettenberg Bay, called the ‘Beautiful Bay” by the Portuguese explorers, and it’s easy to see why. Along the famous Garden Route, this 4-hour drive will take you through the beautiful Tsitsikamma region with huge Indigenous forests and rivers. We will visit Monkeyland and Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary, places known for making happy endings to sad stories involving some of Africa’s most fascinating creatures.
Monkeyland is the world’s first, multi-species free-roaming primate sanctuary hosting over 550 primates of 10 different species, even lemurs. We’ll go on a 1-hour guided tour into the 12-hectare forest with one of South Africa’s most professionally trained Monkey Safari Guides. The guides will endeavor to find as many of the different species and give us ample time to take photos and ask questions. Our past groups agree it is a delightful place to visit.
At Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary, we enjoy a 90min walking tour to see and photograph lions, leopards, tigers, jaguars and other big cats, as well as springboks, zebras and a host of other animals from raised platforms located around the sanctuary. Follow the hyperlink above to read all about the wonderful work they do.
We’ll arrive in charming Plettenberg Bay in the late afternoon. Playground to the wealthy, beach mansions overlook the Indian Ocean, often dotted with luxury yachts, while leisure time is given over to polo and golf, among other things.
Our home for the next four nights is the amazing Tsala Treetop Suites. Like all guests here, you’ll get the VIP treatment and feel you have arrived in paradise. Set amidst the treetops of an age-old indigenous forest, Tsala is a lavish celebration of the spirit of Africa. Tucked into the forest canopy, the hide-away suites each with private pool are the epitome of romanticism. Constructed of stone, wood and glass these ultimate of abodes, comprise a sumptuous bedroom, an elegant sitting room with fireplace and a spacious bathroom
Overnight: Tsala Treetop Lodge (4 nights)Emulating the monumental ruins of an ancient central African civilization, the impressive stone-masonry entrance flanked by water features leads into a magnificent foyer supported by polished Blackwood columns. The afro-baroque décor with its earthy colors, rich textures and handcrafted fittings draws inspiration from the diverse cultures of Africa, yet remains integrated with the sophistication of the Western world. Whether from the exotically appointed dining room, the intimate glassed-in lounge, or the large open decks high above the forest floor, the views are all breathtakingly beautiful, encompassing lush forests extending across rolling valleys towards distant hills. August 10 – Marine Big 5 Safari B
We head out to sea in search of the Marine Big 5, (whale, shark, dolphin, seal and penguin), embarking on a thrilling 2-hour nautical journey that commences and concludes with an exhilarating beach launch into the waves! The specially crafted cat-style boat boasts an ocean-conquering design that prioritizes both safety and comfort. They are able to approach whales as close as 50 meters once spotted. Anticipate encounters with an array of marine life, from seals and pelagic birds to majestic sharks, substantial fish, penguins, and even octopuses, all thriving in their natural habitats.
We’ll return at midday and the afternoon is free. There are many beachside restaurants where you can go for lunch. Walk on the beach or explore the beautiful Robberg Peninsula. For those looking for adventures, Plettenberg Bay offers ziplining, skydiving, bungee jumping or kayaking.
Our excursion returns via the Garden of Eden Forest Walk, which offers the opportunity to follow a long wooden boardwalk through the incredible Indigenous forest, giving you an opportunity to soak the forest in. Experience giant moss and lichen-covered trees, dappled sunlight, moss, and streams.
Dinner is also on your own, but there are two options for dinner, either at Zinzi Restaurant, Tsala’s fine dining option and in the top 100 restaurants in South Africa or at Hunters Country House, offering elegant a la carte dining inspired by South African flavors.
Overnight: Tsala Treetop Lodge
August 11 – Free at Last. Fun along the Garden Route B
There is so much to see or do. Make the most of your final day in this amazing region! Today, you have the whole day to explore the area. Tsala Lodge and Nicki can arrange activities there. AFS’s favorites here include:

This is a 4-hour excursion that includes lunch, and we suggest you spend some time in Knysna shopping afterward before heading back to the lodge. 10am-2pm
Other activities loved by visitors include a Treetops Canopy Tour for an unforgettable adventure as you zipline from one platform to the next along a series of steel cables set amongst magnificent natural surroundings. The scenery high up within the forest canopy is spectacular. Enjoy the view from above while taking in waterfalls and spotting birdlife amongst the surrounding trees. Pre-Trip Preparation
- Read the revised Heading Abroad with AFS, especially if you are new to AFS.
• Ensure your passport is valid 6 months after return date with two blank pages – these are Visa pages, not addendum pages. Take a photo of your passport to store in the cloud or bring a copy. If you lose your passport, US embassies now accept a digital copy from your email.
• To speed through US Customs download Mobile Passport. Look in your App Store for details.
• Notify bank and cc company of travel dates so they don’t block charges.
• All airline rules differ. It is imperative to read your airline rules on their website to ensure a smooth departure! Always check your flight before departure. - No travel meds
- Visas – None for US. citizens
Fitness Level Easy as you only need to get in and out of Safari vehicles.
=======================================================
Air Travel – We rarely offer group air now due to industry changes and past challenges. Previously, participants would express initial interest, prompting us to make a group booking, but if they found better rates and canceled, we incurred significant losses. Given the small group size and lack of interest in group air, participants must now book their own flights. Be aware that airline rules vary and can change, so stay connected with your airline for updates, and remember to print your ticket or have your mobile boarding pass ready for check-in.
- You’re responsible for booking your flights. Understand that all airline rules differ and can change. Monitor your airline’s updates and print your ticket for check-in.
- Early Arrival: Consider flying in early to ensure you’re present at the trip’s start.
- Airline Apps: Download your airline’s app to track bookings, delays, baggage, and contact their support.
- Business Class: If interested in business class, many don’t realize fares range from 4K to 9K. We do have a few good contacts for AFS that can get seats at nearly half cost by combining award miles…. ali@above9.travel Ph. (855) 777-6336 or britney@business-class.com 305-390-4132 or see skylux.com or business-class.com. Tell them Suzy sent you.
Important Dates: Air dates AUG 4-12, 2025.
Flight Dates
- Departure: August 4 (from USA)
- Arrival in PLZ (Port Elizabeth): August 5 (first day of land tour)
- First Night: Paxton Hotel (airport location)
Flight Routes
Option 1: Direct Flights
- USA to arrive: Port Elizabeth Airport (PLZ) by AUG 5
- Departure: George Airport (GRJ) on Aug 12
Option 2: If direct flights price out higher than anticipated, a possible Cost-Saving Alternative
- Fly round-trip to Johannesburg stay at sunrock.com or one of the many hotels at or near the JNB airport. Next morning fly to Port Elizabeth from Johannesburg. The cost is minimal for these flights. Plan the same for your return at minimal cost.
- Then book separate domestic flights to:
- Port Elizabeth (PLZ)
- George (GRJ)
Compare both options for your specific departure city. The Johannesburg route with separate domestic flights might offer significant savings over direct flights to smaller airports.
Doing Own Air & Booking Flights – We recommend using Google Flights to research air travel. We suggest buying directly from the airline or working with a travel agent for booking. This ensures you have support if any flight issues arise. We suggest that you avoid booking using third-party booking engines like Expedia, as they can make resolving reservation problems difficult.
If you need economy seat assistance, our Delhi representative can help. Email flights@diversedestination.com with the following details:
- Your exact travel dates
- Destination
- Full name as it appears on your passport
- Birthdate
Customizing Your Tour – While we respect your independence in traveling, we recommend extending your tour at the end of your trip, when you’re well-acclimated to the destination. If you wish to add stops in other countries, research thoroughly to understand the costs of tours, transport, and hotels. Note that AFS cannot guarantee the quality of your trip beyond our organized tours.
Important: Our Specialty is Group Tours
As a group tour operator, our resources are dedicated to organizing group experiences. We are not equipped to assist with individual travel plans. For personalized vacation arrangements, consider services that specialize in individual travelers.
About Airport Transfers- this trip is easy because our first hotel is next to the airport in Port Elizabeth. Simply follow the directions and signs.
Meet Up With Group- On Aug 5 a time will be set to meet the group at the hotel for a briefing. More on this later closer to departure when we gather everyone’s arrival information.
Baggage– Think light to ease your burden, not like you’re fleeing your homeland. You’ll be changing hotels multiple times, so aim for one carry-on, one medium checked suitcase (under 45lbs – check with a bathroom scale). Consider using Apple AirTags to track your bags, helpful if the airline loses them. Leave room in your luggage for souvenirs. Make sure to clearly attach your identification both inside and outside of all bags.
Packing- Google weather in Johannesburg a week prior departure – should Johannesburg average weather temperatures in early August in Johannesburg South Africa should be in the low 80’s.
This trip is so easy and casual throughout. Simply pack spring/summer clothing with a light jacket for nights and long flights. Umbrella, hat, swimsuit, rain jacket, water bottle, fleece for game drives that can be cool in the morning, comfy sneakers, all hotels have hair dryers. The game drives go out in the early mornings and evenings as this is when the game is most active. The vehicles are open vehicles and it can be cold. The trick here is to layer your clothes as it will warm up as the sun comes up. Bring a jacket. They do provide blankets and rain ponchos if needed.
Most important things: sunscreen ( factor 40+), hat, sunglasses, plug adaptor, cell charger, small daypack for carrying all your things on game drives.
This trip is so easy. Simply pack summer clothing with a light jacket for nights and long flights. Umbrella, hat, comfy sneakers, all hotels have hair dryers.
Cool travel hacks from our AFSers! Pack overnight outfit in your carry-on, liquid IV packets to hydrate, use packing cubes, downy wrinkle spray, Apple AirTags, extra nylon bag to check laundry home, tons of US dollars for extra tips, fully charged travel banks, less is more, get global entry.
Electric– Don’t forget a portable backup charger, cords, gadgets, etc. Cell phones and tablets do not need a converter; you only need an adapter plug. AFSers often leave charger cords in room, so be sure to double-check your room before check out.
- South Africa uses the big round three prong ( D/ M) and the smaller round 2 prong( C). Please remember to bring a plug adaptor.
All properties have hairdryers. See https://www.power-plugs-sockets.com
Money Matters – Always bring some cash! You will need some cash for personal tipping, meals, and shopping. $300 cash should suffice. Change currency on arrival at airport, bank, or hotels or withdraw local currency from an ATM. Note -independent ATMs are risky due to skimmer scams. This is especially true in South Africa. Safest ATMs are at airport and banks. Always shield your pin number when entering. Bring newer bills 2016 on as some countries won’t take old or slightly damaged bills.
Master Card and Visa widely accepted. Amex rarely accepted. Credit cards are far safer than using your debit card. I use my credit card for most purchases. Many cards now offer no foreign transaction fees. (Some countries in Africa and Asia require new bills dated after 2016. Older bills not accepted when changing money.)
- Currency Exchange Rate $1 = 18 Rand (awesome rate!)
- Follow the link below to create a conversion cheat sheet
- https://www.oanda.com/currency/travel-exchange-rates
Gratuities – Please note that gratuities are not included in your trip price, but we collect them in advance for easy distribution throughout; Tipping guides, assistants, drivers, porters, lodge staff, and others are customary and help build positive relationships. $110 has been added to your invoice for ease of distribution. If local staff exceed your expectations, feel free to give additional tips directly. Your generosity helps ensure a positive experience and reinforces the good reputation we strive to maintain as travelers.
Personal Tipping – If service is stellar, feel free to give more directly. All tourists leave behind is our reputation. I carry a stash of US ones in an envelope to draw from as needed. Porters – AFSers roll bags to their room. If you use a porter, please tip. For group lunches or dinners included, please leave $2 for waitstaff!
Communication– With internet access and smartphones, staying in touch while abroad is easier than ever. Be sure to check with your provider for rates and coverage on international phone plans before you depart – data roaming rates can add up quickly. When connected to Wi-Fi, texting, iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook messaging are all great ways to reach home. But be cautious with public Wi-Fi: never open attachments or view financial or personal accounts without using a VPN. Remember, unless you’re connected to Wi-Fi, every phone call, text message, and data usage incurs roaming charges. Even with WhatsApp, if you’re not on Wi-Fi, you’ll be charged your provider’s international roaming data rate. For making calls, Facebook Messenger Phone is a free and easy option. The most affordable way to get data on your cell phone is by using a local SIM card or virtual SIM card – just make sure your phone is unlocked. Consider portable Wi-Fi hotspots as another option for staying connected. And don’t forget about video calls: Google Meet, Zoom, and Skype are all great for face-to-face catch-ups when you’re far from home.
Safety: AFS, safety of our Travelers is our priority since our inception in 1989. Our local teams constantly monitor any issues with your destination. They can access real time safety updates and inform us if necessary.
Avoiding Hackers on Vacation. Thieves not only want your money but also your data. Change passwords often. Check device security settings before you leave for your trip. Back up, update, and encrypt your devices and data using a virtual VPN. Since 1989, your safety is our primary concern. Our local teams are experts, constantly monitoring any issues with your destinations. They can access real-time safety issues and will keep us informed if necessary.
Health – All our meals are pure and water is filtered. Bottled water provided throughout. Don’t use ice outside hotels.
(Poverty – you may witness an eyeful of poverty. The beauty is found in its humanity with dignity inherent in the spirit of the people here who possess virtues of simplicity, hard work, gentleness and perseverance. No beggars will harass you. It’s humbling to see them so happy with so little.)
Malaria –South Africa is a malaria-free zone. No meds are needed.
- Bottled water is always best abroad, as our gut isn’t accustomed to local tap water. Stay hydrated.
- Travel health – Avoid street foods. Bring Imodium or anti-diarrhea medicine. Bring sunscreen. Load up on antioxidants like vitamin C to zinc.
Photography – Remember to always ask locals before taking their picture, as it’s a polite thing to do. You can share your best photos with each other on your AFS Private Facebook Group Page. AFS especially loves photos for our website that feature program participants with locals, children, animals, or at iconic sites – not typical tourist shots you could find online. Keep in mind there might be some restrictions on taking photos at Buddhist or religious sites, and your guide will let you know.

Chewing- South African cuisine is a vibrant tapestry of flavors influenced by its diverse cultures, including indigenous, colonial, and immigrant traditions. One iconic dish is braai, a barbecue featuring marinated meats grilled over an open flame. Bobotie, a spiced minced meat dish topped with a creamy egg custard, showcases the fusion of Malay and Cape Dutch flavors. Biltong, a dried cured meat, is a popular snack that reflects the country’s love for bold, savory tastes. Overall, South African cuisine celebrates the use of fresh ingredients and communal dining, making it a unique culinary experience.
Accommodations –Accommodations – Our itinerary has links to each hotel. Hotels can change, but it’s rare.
Roommates – Single supplements have significantly increased in price– if available at all. Save money and buy yourself an awesome local gift. We all live alone, but save money when traveling by rooming together. Suzy spends a lot of time on roommate matching. 99% of our clients are wonderful and you’re only in your room to sleep at night. The best option is to invite a friend. Note, kindness begets kindness. Many of our seasoned travelers bring headsets to drown out any excess noise. We share rooms only to sleep at night.
Please understand if the AFS room list ends up with unbalanced gender, and forces a single room, we will offer it to all in group. If all decline, we split the added forced cost single room. If you were the last to book we may have to remove you from the trip unless you share in the supplement cost
Leisure Time – For your free time, it’s best to arrive and ask our local expert guides for suggestions. We notice many newer clients pre-plan many activities on the AFS trip well before they arrive, often with disappointing results. Our daily itineraries are pretty full, but there will be some free time. Expert travelers revel in the element of surprise in a new destination and allow the wind to blow them where it will. Use Google Maps on your phone to find everything nearby.
Extend Your Adventure – We encourage you to extend your stay after our tour. Adding a few days can be a great way to explore more at your own pace. If you’re thinking of visiting another country, research costs carefully. While we can’t arrange this for you, we’re happy to offer some guidance. Stopovers can be a great option, but remember, AFS isn’t responsible for the quality of your trip once you’ve left our guided tour.
Important: AFS and Private Travel – While we’d love to help you plan your entire trip, AFS specializes in group tours. We don’t have the resources to arrange private vacations. Our goal is to provide unforgettable group experiences. Join us for the main tour, and then go from there!
Private Facebook Group Page – Connect with fellow travelers before your trip and share photos. Find the link in your Wetravel welcome letter after depositing. Note: All important info is emailed and in Trip Tips/UPDATES, not just the Facebook group.
Emergency Contact – AFS phone or text 770-432-8225, or email us at https://afstravelers.com/contact-us/ More contacts will be provided with your Final Docs email 2 to 3 weeks before departure. Your guide can handle a call home for a true emergency. Do not expect to use your trip leader’s cell phone; you’ll need to use your own.
Cancellation Policy – Follow link Cancellation Refund Policy
Travel Insurance – While travel insurance is optional, it’s highly recommended in today’s unpredictable world. Standard coverage can protect you against trip interruptions and cancellations. For a comprehensive comparison of all your options, visit www.insuremytrip.com. If you want the flexibility to cancel for any reason (CFAR). Note that no insurance company covers cancellations due to fear.
If you have a pre-existing condition, such as an elderly parent’s medical issue or your own health concern, and you want the security of travel insurance, it’s crucial to purchase your policy within 12 to 15 days of your initial trip deposit. This ensures you’ll have full coverage. You can adjust the trip cost later as needed, like adding the cost of an airline ticket. While you can buy travel insurance at any time, be aware that purchasing outside the 15-day window may introduce some limitations. We recommend considering TravelSafe, Allianz, or Seven Corners.

AFS Group Etiquette – Prepare for your departure joyfully with no contempt before investigation upon arrival. Please understand that with travel, things are not like at home and changes may occur. Great trips work best for those with an open mind, flexible attitude and adventuresome spirit. If changes occur, embrace them with serendipity. Who knows?… The unexpected may prove to be a better experience. Adapt and go with the flow with a laid-back attitude. Be spontaneous. Be tolerant of foreign cultures in respecting their centuries of traditions. Embrace the differences. Be curious, not shy. Smile – locals will sense your energy of kindness and kindness always begets kindness. Our common goal is to experience different cultures, make new friends, get great photos, have large fun, and return home safely with memories worthy of recollection.
10 Commandments for AFS Travelers
- Thou shall not expect to find things as thou hast at home, for thou hast left thy home to find things different.
- Thou shall not take anything too seriously.A carefree mind is the beginning of a fun vacation.
- Thou shall not let other group members get on thy nerves, for thou art paying good money to enjoy thyself.
- Thou shall not forget that doist represent America (Canada too) at all times. Kindness begets kindness, ugliness begets ugliness.
- Thou shall not worry. This is for thine AFS trip leader. They who worry hath no pleasure, and few things are fatal.
- Remember thy passport at all times. A person without a passport is a person without a country.
- Blessed is the person who can say “thank you” in any language
- When in Rome, do as the Romans do
- Do not judge the people of a foreign land by one person with whom thou hast had trouble.
- Remember, thou art a guest in each land. They who treateth their host with respect shall be treated as a guest of honor.
Please note that AFS is non-partisan – With our homogeneous groups, we all want to focus on the common denominator – our love of travel. In today’s divisive world, we suggest members not discuss politics and if you must, please practice my rule of TOK: Tolerance, Open-mindedness and Kindness.
Please be advised that the operation of some tours may need to be rearranged or modified to suit local conditions, but all activities stated will be included. We are here for you to address any questions about your trip. In time, we believe travel will begin to normalize with less rules and we appreciate your cooperation until then. Now more than ever before, travelers value the privilege of travel to explore our world. You’ve been waiting so long, it’s time for recess!
