Meet Suzy, the ultimate travel rockstar! This fearless flight attendant spent 14 years soaring the skies, racking up stamps in not one, not two, but SEVEN passports—we’re talking over 130 countries! She’s not just well-traveled; she’s a travel force of nature.

Back in 1989, Suzy founded AFS, dedicating her life to sharing her infectious wanderlust with the world. For the first decade, she was the queen of solo travel tours, leading intrepid adventurers on unforgettable journeys. These days, she handpicks 2 to 4 special tours each year, taking travelers to those thrilling, off-the-beaten-path destinations that’ll push your boundaries in the best way possible.

As a cultural ambassador extraordinaire, Suzy lives for those magical moments when her groups connect with the locals. Her travel wisdom? Pure gold. Her enthusiasm? Absolutely contagious. With Suzy, you’re not just a tourist, you’re a fellow explorer, ready to embrace the challenges and wonders of our incredible world.

Suzy is a former Miss Wisconsin and teacher with a passion for Travel Writing. In her free time, she does tour industry conventions to gain knowledge and global site inspections to visit magical places firsthand and present to you the most dreamy vacations.  (Read more in her President’s Letter.)  “At the end of trips, it is music to my ears when I get to hear – “Suzy, this solo vacation exceeded my wildest expectations!”  She says, “I deeply care that my tribe blends well and that each member is having Large Fun.  My head is always churning with preemptive thoughts on trips and communicating these to our local guides to ensure there’s a perfect mix of thrills with relaxation.”

GTL CAROL HUNTINGTON – NEW MEXICO

Meet Carol, a globe-trotting powerhouse who’s led 40+ AFS adventures since 2007. She’s explored 125+ countries on all 7 continents, inspiring every group with her boundless enthusiasm.

Carol’s secret is her genuine love for people and her calm, problem-solving style. She builds connections, keeps everyone smiling, and always goes the extra mile. Her recent sabbatical? A 13-country epic—just one example of her passion for discovery.

GTL DEANNA PURDIE – GEORGIA

Meet Deanna, Atlanta’s fearless traveler and AFS standout since 2017. She’s explored 60+ countries (mostly solo), and with degrees from SCAD, she’s your go-to for eye-catching social media.

A tech whiz with an IT/Communications background, Deanna’s also your fix-it expert. When she isn’t solving tech issues, she’s skiing, snorkeling, hiking, or hitting the gym. After 8 years studying French, she always has fresh travel tips.

Deanna’s leadership and energy inspire every group. When she leads, adventures turn unforgettable. Ready for a trip you’ll never forget? With Deanna, you’re in for the journey of a lifetime.

GTL JANICE MCDONALD – GEORGA

GTL Janice was an early AFSer and has traveled with Suzy since almost the beginning. She has visited more than 96 countries and all 7 continents both on her own and in her job as a writer and television producer! She has actually been to Antarctica TWICE – once with the legendary Jacques Cousteau and a second time with Prince Albert of Monaco. Imagine that. While she currently works mostly with ABC News, she spent 20 years with CNN, reporting news across the globe.

A prolific writer, Janice has written 17 books on travel and history. She also has an independent production company called J-Mac Productions which has afforded her the opportunity to do independent documentaries as well as producing marketing, training and commercial materials. She has won numerous awards including 6 Emmys and three Edward R. Murrows for her work.

GTL SALANDA WILLIAMS – GEORGIA

Meet Joey, a seasoned fitness pro with 30+ years in the industry. As a certified rehab fitness therapist and personal trainer, he knows how to challenge and support all skill levels.

Since 2013, Joey’s led adventure trips, including Kilimanjaro climbs and events for athletes with disabilities. His leadership always earns top marks.

Joey’s personal feats are next-level: 3 World’s Toughest Mudders, 5 Spartan World Championships, 7 Spartan Beast Races, and more. With his deep experience and love of adventure, Joey is the perfect leader for your next fitness tour.

GTL CHRITIE HINTZ – FLORIDA

Meet Christie, our travel bug queen! After losing her husband, she found new life in travel—her first AFS trip to Africa sparked journeys to five continents and 50+ countries, with highlights from Mongolia to Mozambique.

A New York native now in sunny Florida, Christie’s retired from teaching special education but busier than ever. She sings in a band, volunteers with disabled adults, and supports foster kids. Her mission: spread patience, kindness, and laughter everywhere she goes.

Everyone adores Christie’s energy and heart. With each trip, she inspires others to embrace adventure. We can’t wait to see where she heads next!

Meet Greg Hiebert, a Kansas native turned global explorer. He’s traveled all seven continents, with adventures from Nepal and Africa to Mongolia and Australia. As an AFS veteran and seasoned trip leader, Greg brings nonstop energy and enthusiasm to every group he guides.

Greg’s travel bug bit in college, working a summer in Yellowstone and then road-tripping through the West and Mexico. Off the road, he builds furniture, gardens, and runs—he’s finished 6 marathons, 52 halves, and plenty more races. Always seeking the next challenge, Greg is now gearing up to hike Mont Blanc with AFS.
