“Jungles, Elephants & the Lantern Festival”
Thailand’s Amazing Wonders – River Kwai to Chiang Mai
Oct 30 – Nov 8, 2025
The best vacations are the ones with the most compelling stories to share. You’ll be talking about this luxury 5-star getaway forever with the kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, flavors and playful experiences we packed into one trip. From Thailand’s lush mountain jungles in the south to the colorful culture of the north, you’ll discover three of this diverse country’s most enticing regions.
We start by touring the golden temples in uber-cool Bangkok with our special AFS massage session and exclusive tuk-tuk parade! (There are so many new things to explore in the city that never sleeps; you may want to fly in a few days early to explore.)
Then, we head south to explore the wartime legacy area of Kanchanaburi on the scenic Thai Burma Railway. We walk the legendary Bridge over the River Kwai, made famous by the movie and take a ride on what became known as the infamous “Death Railway.”
Enjoy bamboo rafting to waterfalls, caves and a visit to the Mon Tribal Village. Then channel your elephant whisperer at the ethical and world-renowned Elephant Nature Park for immersion with the ellies!
You’ll love your “floating villas” at the breathtaking new Floathouse River Kwai resort, which is so unique that it looks surreal! This nature hideaway of rustic elegance floats on the water amid the lush green jungle. You’ll see why it’s called the “Pride of Thailand.” Naturally luxurious, this hotel gives the word “glamping“ a whole new dimension and you’ll never forget it!
Fly to the lush Rose of the North to check into the exquisite award-winning Rati Lanna Riverside Resort & Spa in fabulous Chang Mai. We’ll take in the best of this city with tours, but the highlight is the annual Loi Krathong or “Festival of Lights.’ The world-famous Lantern Festival overloads the senses and has exploded in popularity in the past few years. Revel in the celebration and our banquet at the temple of Yi Peng. Feel the spiritual energy as thousands of monks and locals send their prayers in Lotus baskets down the river, and countless paper lanterns are released into the sky during the full moon. All of Chiang Mai comes alive this week, and it’s our rare privilege to get accommodation during this time this year.
You may have been to Thailand before, but we raised the bar with more adventure. We know Thailand well as it is our 13th AFS group to tour here. Everyone loves the Royal Kingdom of Thailand, known as the “Land of Smiles.” TripAdvisor says it’s the best country for the most bang for your buck. We’ve made it so exceptionally affordable that you may want to add another Asian stop over at the trip’s end.
It’s the kind of vacation that dreams are made of. Come receive your blessing! The elephants never forget, and neither will you. Let the forever memories begin.
Our Glorious AFS Itinerary
October 29 or 30 – Depart USA
Fly to Bangkok. Check your flight bookings to insure that you arrive in Bangkok on October 31st, when the land portion begins. Most flights will cross the international dateline so you may lose an entire day. Don’t worry, you’ll make it up on the way back.
31 October – Sawasdee…Welcome to The Lands of Smiles
We’ll arrive in Bangkok and have a common group transfer to our hotel based flight arrivals to the deluxe Avani Riverside. Overlooking the Chao Phraya River, we’ll enjoy a soothing retreat in the heart of a bustling city.
Well known as the City of Angels, Bangkok – known locally as Krungthepmahanakorn – is Thailand’s spiritual, cultural, political, commercial, educational and diplomatic enter. It became the country’s capital in 1782 under the first monarch of the present Chakri Dynasty. A vibrant city, there is an endless choice of sightseeing and entertainment opportunities. With numerous canal (klong) networks, the Chaophraya River, it’s no wonder it is called the “Venice of the East.”
This evening is free to revel in Bangkok’s nightlife. Everyone loves the luxury rooftop bars and the Skytrain can whisk you anywhere.

1 November – Bangkok Temple Tours & Tuk Tuks B D
After breakfast, we set out to explore Bangkok and its marvelous temples, starting in Chinatown, home to Thailand’s largest Chinese community and the Stunning Wat Trimit. This is the world’s largest massive gold seated Buddha, measuring nearly 16 and a half feet high and weighting five and a half tons. Once hidden from invading armies by a covering of stucco and plaster, the gold beneath was discovered by accident when it was accidentally dropped as it was moved.
Next is Wat Po, which was the first public university of Thailand and is the oldest and most extensive temple in Bangkok. It houses hundreds of chedis and the 3rd biggest colossal reclining Buddha in Thailand. The gigantic gold-plated reclining statue has inlaid mother-of-pearl soles of 108 good lucks and is highly revered among Buddhists. If we time it right, we should be able to witness monks’ chanting in the main chapel. which is not commonly seen by tourists. Since Wat Po is a school for traditional medicine and massage, we’ll enjoy a Thai Foot massage.
We’ll have our own special AFS Parade of Tuk Tuks as we make our way through Bangkok’s old quarter, past the Grand Palace, the Giant Swing, Bangkok City Hall, Democracy Monument, and on to Rajadamnoen Avenue, with a final stop at Wat Benjamaborphit, commonly known as Marble Temple, built of Carrara marble from Italy. The cloister around the assembly hall houses 52 images of Buddha.
In the evening, we’ll celebrate with a Welcome Dinner at the award-winning Cabbage & Condom Restaurant, considered one of the of the most unique Thai restaurants in Bangkok.
Overnight: Avani Riverside.
2 November – Kanchanaburi River Kwai with Train Ride B D
After an early breakfast, we depart for Kanchanburi, located west of Bangkok. Sharing a border with Myanmar, Kanchanaburi province is known for its magnificent landscapes and stunning mountainous terrain, with tropical rain forests, wildlife sanctuaries, waterfalls and the famous River Kwai.
We’ll visit the Cemetery of the Allied Prisoners of World War II, which contains graves of 6,982 Allied POWs who perished from starvation, overwork, disease or execution during the construction of the “Death Railway” under the control of the Japanese army. For maximum appreciation, be sure to stream some movies on the profound history here.
The Thailand-Burma Railway Centre helps contextualize the horrendous conditions under which the 250-mile-long railway was built. It originally ran from Baan Pong in Thailand to Thanbuyuzayat in Myanmar.
We’ll then visit the famous Bridge over the River Kwai itself. Known internationally, thanks to both movies and books, the black iron bridge was brought from Java by the Japanese army and reassembled by the POWs. It was the frequent target of Allied bombing raids during 1945 and was rebuilt after the war ended.
We’ll board a train for a scenic ride along the Kwai River on part of the historic Death Railway Route from Tha Kilen to Nam Tok Station. Before heading to the incredible FloatHouse Resort on the River Kwai, we’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Loading the top of the scenic river Kwai, this unique Thai-style resort is surrounded by tropical forests and the mountains of Saiyoke. It’s a magical experience to feel immersed in nature miles away from civilization here. Offering free Wi-Fi, it features private villas with a 32-inch flatscreen TV and private sundecks with daybeds.
Our afternoon is free to explore the gorgeous grounds, but we’ll enjoy dinner tonight at the floating Pontoon Restaurant.

Then, visit the Mon tribal village, where the Mon people have lived for generations. Visit the Golden Rock, Buddha image cave and village school. (Please bring some goodies for the kids.). Take a short walk on easy jungle trail along the River bank to get to the stunning viewpoint of River Kwai.
Lunch at local restaurant before visiting Lawa Cave and exploring the fascinating stalactite in the afternoon and there’s a chance to spot Khun Kitti, the smallest bat in the world with a span-world of 10 cm and a weight of less than 2 gram. Dinner at your hotel.

05 November – Chiang Mai Tour & Festival B D
This morning we will visit the must-sees of Chiang Mai, starting with Wat Pra That Doi Suthep
This is Chiang Mai’s most important and visible landmark, located near the summit of Doi Suthep, 3,520 feet above sea level and 9 miles from the town. After a drive up the mountain’s winding road, the final climb to the site is via a magnificent Naga (dragon-headed serpent) staircase of 306 steps.
The climb is worth the effort! Inside is an intriguing copper-plated chedi topped by a five-tier gold umbrella which contains partial relics of Lord Buddha. If timing is good, we’ll witness an impressive scene of monks and novice solemnly praying in the Viharn, a daily routine commonly experienced by all visiting the temple in the evening. Admire the stunning panorama over the city of Chiang Mai from the summit of Doi Suthep before leaving the temple.
We’ll return to the hotel in the afternoon and enjoy some leisure time before we meet again for a sumptuous group dinner at the RatiLanna. We head down to the river to release our banana-leaf baskets with our wishes as a celebration of Loy Krathong Festival. It’s a dream to see the countless lotus baskets lit with candles floating away to the goddess of water as fireworks like the sky.

We’ll return to the hotel in late evening
Overnight: RatiLanna Riverside Spa Resort
07 November – Elephant park and Leisure time B
Morning – Half Day visit Elephant Conservation at Elephant Nature Park –
After breakfast, get picked up from your hotel in Chiang Mai city, and admire the views of beautiful mountains crossed by spectacular roads as you drive through picturesque countryside to the Elephant Nature Park, a sanctuary and rescue center for elephants in Mae Taeng District. On the way you will hear the personal stories of our rescued elephants as told by one of the park’s expert guides. You will also have a chance to see “Vanishing Giants”, the award-winning National Geographic documentary profiling the work Khun Lek is doing on behalf of Asian elephants in Thailand.
At the park you will have the opportunity to spend time with the various herds. Many of these elephants have left behind a traumatic past and for the first time are able to form relationships with other elephants and rediscover their elephant nature. One of the highlights is to hand fruit and vegetables to the elephants from the viewing platform and observe the incredible giants as they roam the park with their family groups and walk around the park in smaller groups. Expect great photos! Walk around the park with the elephants (no riding), and see the elephants socializing in their herds. After the guided walk, enjoy a sumptuous and varied vegetarian buffet of Asian and Western dishes. You can chat with your guide and the park volunteers during lunchtime, which is a nice way to learn even more about the elephants at the park. Occasionally the stories will be interrupted by the noises and interactions between the park’s elephants. 1:30 we say goodbyes to the elephants and head an hour back to Chiang Mai. Note, ENP is voted as the most ethical elephant sanctuary in the world!
The afternoon is yours to explore the many attractions in and around Chang Mai. There are numerous other temples to visit, you can explore the famous Warorot Market or even take in a cooking class. The trip tips are designed to answer questions. It’s your responsibility to read this information. Updates will be posted here. So I’m travelers have lost their entire trip for not reading what we sent on visas, air details, inoculations, etc. Always found on our website. We email you updates but check trip tips time to time.
Payment dates – 50% due June 20 and final due Juky 20. We partner with Wetravel for secure, fee-free electronic check payments. Simply follow their instructions. Your fearless GTL (Gracious Trip Leader, not a guide but a liaison between our guides and group to ensure things run smoothly.)
Carol isn’t your average trip leader – she’s a travel virtuoso who’s been leading AFS adventures since 2007, touching down in over 125 countries across every continent. With 40+ group trips under her belt, she brings more than just expertise to the table; she brings heart.
Whether she’s problem-solving on the fly or inspiring travelers to embrace new experiences during her recent 13-country sabbatical, Carol’s genuine love for people and unflappable nature make every journey with her more than just a trip – it’s a life-changing adventure.
- Trip Prep:
• Read the revised Heading Abroad with AFS, especially if you are new to AFS.
• Ensure your passport is valid 6 months after return date with two blank pages – these are Visa pages, not addendum pages. Take a photo of your passport to store in the cloud or bring a copy. If you lose your passport, US embassies now except a digital copy from your email.
• To speed through US Customs download Mobile Passport. Look in your App Store for details.
• Notify bank and cc company of travel dates so they don’t block charges.
• All airline rules differ. It is imperative to read your airline rules on their website to ensure a smooth departure! Always check your flight before departure.
Visa- New Thailand ETA Visa is free on arrival. A month out, we will advise how to create an account for application. In 24 hours you will receive a QR code to download and flash on airport arrival.
=======================================================
Fitness level –– Moderate walks and activities daily. You should be able to walk one mile in 20 minutes. If you have concerns, text your name at 770-432-8225 to discuss. (Know your limits! AFS trips are generally soft adventures with moderate activity. Our trips are large fun and can be active. All tours involve walking, at times extensive with uneven pavement. As we age, we think we can do what we used to do but discover on the trip an activity is too strenuous and are slowing down the entire group. If you think you need something tamer, check out Eldertreks – they specialize in trips for older folks. We cannot be responsible for booking a trip beyond your skill level and physical stamina. AFS is all about having a good time. Please be respectful of your fellow AFS Travelers and consider choosing an itinerary that is more conducive to your needs so you can thoroughly enjoy your trip!)
General Air Info – Consider flying in early to ensure you’ll be there once trip begins. Always download and use your airlines app! Use app to track your booking, delays, bags, to show boarding pass and to contact them. If you have a flight problem go to the airline’s website “contact us” page or reach them by text, social media, Skype or call their international number. Also, premium credit cards often offer many air perks, assistance, insurance, lounge passes, global entry and more. Read more at www.tpg.com for best cards. Many say they want to fly business class but don’t realize fare range from 4K to 9K. We do have two good contacts that can get the sea seats at nearly half cost. [email protected] or ali@business–class.com. Tell them Suzy sent you.
Important Air Dates:
October 29, fly USA to Bangkok ( you cross international dateline to lose a day but gain it back at trips end). November 8, fly Chiang Mai to USA.
Dozens of airlines fly to Thailand, best rates from West Coast. Eva Air via Taipei is the cheapest now. Consider Qatar, Turkish, Singapore, Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong, ANA, Japan, and more.
Now is a good time to buy your air. Doing own air provides you flexibility to extend trip pre-or post if you wish or add a stopover.
An air hack is to buy a round-trip ticket to Bangkok. Then buy one internal domestic leg on Bangkok Airways out of Chiang Mai.
Group Air: None. Sometimes we offer group air but find few people book sometimes find better rates on own direct from hometown. This provides you better flexibility to go early or extend at trip end. I know we will not meet the minimum required to make a group booking since this is a small group.
Doing Own Air– We like Google Flights. 3rd-party booking engines like Expedia, make it easy to book, but it is nearly impossible to handle air problems. Buy direct from airline or pay a travel agent to ticket you. If you need help air with the economy seat, our guy Delhi can help; email [email protected] with your exact air dates, destination, passport name, and details with birthdate.
Airport Transfers- We will have one common group airport pick-up to accommodate as many people as possible. If your time falls outside the group, simply take a taxi or Uber to the hotel. Carol will be gathering all your air arrivals four weeks out.
(With travelers arriving and departing on different days and times, it is insurmountable to manage. Group air airport transfers are based on set time. Without group air, there can no longer be any pick-ups or drop-offs. Unfortunately, now like other tour companies, transfers are your responsibility. (We’ve spent weeks each trip making spreadsheets of each person’s air to send to the supplier and then flights change. We then hire a guide, driver and pay airport parking fees. Last year in groups only half showed up as guides waited hours looking for others. Sometimes no AFSers showed up without informing us.) Transfers are not expensive. First, google your arrival airport website to see transfer tab. Suggestions to appear like airport bus, taxi details, Uber and more. Then connect on group Facebook page to set up sharing transfer cost if you like. If you go early and check-in AFS hotel before group arrives, it’s your responsibility to change rooms with your roommate if necessary day one when trip begins.)
Meet Up With Group- Friday, October 31 at 3 PM in lobby of the Avani Riverside Bangkok Hotel. It’s a beautiful property.
Note on Lantern Festivals – Day 6- AFS banquet and celebration of Loi Krathong at Ratilanna to release water lanterns down the river. It’s a beautiful event. Day 7- main lantern festival at the temple of Yi Peng to release lit lanterns in the sky. This is called “festival of lights“ on the 12th lunar month.
Just in as of Jan 29 – we were just advised that tickets are nearly sold out this year for the festival of lights. Our ground team suggested we buy your $250 ticket with transfers now. We wired 8K to secure our space. Please note this amount is in your name and nonrefundable.
Baggage– Think light to ease your burden, not like you’re fleeing your homeland. You change hotel properties 5 times. 1 carry-on bag & 1 medium suitcase not to exceed 45lb checked bag – weigh on a bathroom scale. Apple AirTags work great to track checked bags when the airline cannot, also good for carry-on. Leave space for great souvenirs. Be sure to attach ID inside and out of carry-on and checked bag.
Packing- Google Thailand weather a week out.
Simply pack casual summer clothing. Comfy shoes, old sneakers for jungle and sandals. Bring light rain jacket, umbrella, sunscreen, insect repellent, wide brim, hat, swimsuit.
( Ladies dress conservative in temples, cover elbows to knees and bring a head scarf)
Read Packing 101 in Heading Abroad with AFS
Cool travel hacks from our AFSers! Pack overnight outfit in your carry-on, liquid IV packets to hydrate, use packing cubes, downy wrinkle spray, Apple AirTags, extra nylon bag to check laundry home, tons of US dollars for extra tips, fully charged travel banks, less is more, get global entry.
Retail therapy- Thailand is a shoppers paradise. The silks and cotton cloth is amazing. Great spices, oils and spa products. Lovely ceramics and pottery. Handmade jewelry, and fine gems like sapphires. Beautiful paintings, wood, crafts, puppets and traditional handicrafts. ( I stock up on a dozen silk scarves for Christmas gifts. ) Be cautious of buying designer knock offs at US customs. Bargain everything in the famous night markets !
Electric– Don’t forget a portable backup charger, cords, gadgets, etc. Cell phones and tablets do not need a converter; you only need an adapter plug. AFSers often leave charger cords in room, so be sure to double-check your room before check out. All properties have hairdryers. See https://www.power-plugs-sockets.com
Money Matters – Always bring some cash! You will need some cash for personal tipping, meals, and shopping. $300 cash should suffice. Change currency on arrival at airport, bank, or hotels or withdraw local currency from an ATM. Note -independent ATMs are risky due to skimmer scams. Safest ATMs are at airport and banks. Always shield your pin number when entering. Bring newer bills 2016 on as some countries won’t take old or slightly damaged bills.
Master Card and Visa widely accepted. Amex rarely accepted. Credit cards are far safer than using your debit card. I use my credit card for most purchases. Many cards now offer no foreign transaction fees. (Some countries in Africa and Asia require new bills dated after 2016. Older bills not accepted when changing money.)
- Currency Exchange Rate
- Follow the link below to create a conversion cheat sheet
- https://www.oanda.com/currency/travel-exchange-rates
Gratuities – $95 added to your final invoice for ease of distribution. Carol will distribute. We hired the top ground teams in each country. It’s protocol to tip our guides, assistance, drivers, porters, staff, lodges and more for each group abroad. Discretionary tips help insure a good relationship and the only thing we travelers leave behind is our reputation. Total group tipping is based on minimum standards within the tourism industry. If local staff goes beyond the call of duty for you, we encourage you to give more directly.
Tipping on own – If service is stellar, feel free to give more directly. All we tourists leave behind is our reputation. I carry a stash of US ones in an envelope to draw from as needed. Porters – AFSers roll bags to their room. If you use a porter, please tip. For group lunches or dinners included, please leave $2 for waitstaff!
Communication– Internet is available. With smartphones, be sure to check with your provider for rates and coverage for international phone plans before departure. Data Roaming rates can be expensive. To reach home – Texting, iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook messaging when using WIFI. Be cautious using public Wi-Fi without using VPN. Without VPN never open attachments or view financial or personal accounts on the Internet while abroad. Phone calls, text messages, and data usage of all kinds, it is crucial to understand that, unless you are connected to Wi-Fi, every use of your phone incurs a data toll. That means that viewing and downloading email, browsing the web, viewing social media, and mapping all incur data charges, as do applications that we sometimes assume to be “free,” such as Skype and WhatsApp. Unless you are connected to Wi-Fi, however, WhatsApp is using cellular data, so you are getting charged at your provider’s international roaming data rate. Facebook Messenger Phone is an easy free way to make calls.
Safety: AFS, safety of our Travelers is our priority since our inception in 1989. Our local teams constantly monitor any issues with your destination. They can access real time safety updates and inform us if necessary.
Avoiding Hackers on Vacation. Thieves not only want your money but also your data. Change passwords often. Check device security settings before you leave for your trip. Back up, update, and encrypt your devices and data using a virtual VPN. Since 1989, your safety is our primary concern. Our local teams are experts, constantly monitoring any issues with your destinations. They can access real-time safety issues and will keep us informed if necessary.
- Bottled water is always best abroad, as our gut isn’t accustomed to local tap water. Stay hydrated.
- Travel health – Avoid street foods. Bring Imodium or anti-diarrhea medicine. Bring sunscreen. Load up on antioxidants like vitamin C to zinc.
Photography – Before taking pictures of locals, know it is polite to ask. Your AFS Private Facebook Group Page is a great way to share your best shots with each other. AFS loves photos with group participants (not typical churches, monuments, or any shot that looks like you pulled it off of the net, etc.) for our website. The best photos are ones that include a group member with a local, children, animals, or at iconic sites in the same frame! Note, there may be some restrictions with photos in Buddhist places and religious sites. Guide will advise.
Websites of Interest:
Here are the official tourism websites for Thailand, Chiang Mai, and the Lantern Festival:
1. Thailand Tourism:
– Official Website: Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) (https://www.tourismthailand.org/)
2. Chiang Mai Tourism:
– Official Website: Chiang Mai Tourism (https://www.chiangmai.go.th/)
3. Yi Peng Lantern Festival (often celebrated in Chiang Mai):
– Since there isn’t a single official website dedicated solely to the Yi Peng Lantern Festival, you may find information about it on the Chiang Mai tourism site or related tourism websites. Here’s a link that often provides information about the festival:
4. www.thefloathouserivekwai.com
Chewing- Thailand is famous for its vibrant and diverse cuisine, attracting tourists with dishes like Pad Thai, a classic stir-fried noodle dish; Tom Yum Goong, a hot and sour shrimp soup; and Green Curry, a spicy coconut milk-based curry. Other favorites include Som Tum (papaya salad), Massaman Curry, and Khao Soi, a Northern Thai curry noodle soup. Sweet treats like Mango Sticky Rice and savory snacks like Larb (spicy minced meat salad) and Thai Spring Rolls are also popular. Don’t forget to try Thai Iced Tea for a refreshing beverage!
Accommodations – Our itinerary has links to each hotel. Hotels can change, but it’s rare.
Roommates – Single supplements have significantly increased in price– if available at all. Save money and buy yourself an awesome local gift. We all live alone, but save money when traveling by rooming together. Suzy spends a lot of time on roommate matching. 99% of our clients are wonderful and you’re only in your room to sleep at night. The best option is to invite a friend. Note, kindness begets kindness. Many of our seasoned travelers bring headsets to drown out any excess noise. We share rooms only to sleep at night.
Please understand if the AFS room list ends up with unbalanced gender, and forces a single room, we will offer it to all in group. If all decline, we split the added forced cost single room. If you were the last to book we may have to remove you from the trip unless you share in the supplement cost
Leisure Time – For your free time, it’s best to arrive and ask our local expert guides for suggestions. We notice many newer clients pre-plan many activities on the AFS trip well before they arrive, often with disappointing results. Our daily itineraries are pretty full, but there will be some free time. Expert travelers revel in the element of surprise in a new destination and allow the wind to blow them where it will. Amending tour pre-or post-trip. We honor your independent spirit, but encourage you to extend more days at the trip’s end when you’re acclimated well to the destination. If you add another country, we often see many AFSers on Facebook urging others to join them what do you consider the cost of tours, transport, hotels, etc. Stopovers are great to add, but understand AFS has no responsibility for the quality of your trip. Please understand that we are a group tour organizer and do not have the time or resources sources to arrange private vacations for individuals.
Private Facebook Group Page – The benefit of the Private FB Group Page is that you have an opportunity to introduce yourself to your fellow travelers before departure and share trip photos during and after the tour. The link can be found in your Wetravel welcome letter after your initial deposit. (We found that some never read the Trip Tips jumping right to the Private FB Group Page assuming they will get all trip info needed. Often, they only receive rumors or misinformation. All important information is ALWAYS emailed to each participant and posted in Trip Tips under UPDATES. Nobody misses a thing.)
Emergency Contact – AFS phone or text 770-432-8225, or email us at https://afstravelers.com/contact-us/ More contacts will be provided with your Final Docs email 2 to 3 weeks before departure. Your guide can handle a call home for a true emergency. Do not expect to use your trip leader’s cell phone; you’ll need to use your own.
Cancellation Policy – At Adventures For Solo Travelers (AFS), we understand that sometimes unforeseen circumstances may require you to cancel your tour. We have established the following cancellation policy to provide clarity and fairness to all our travelers; thus keeping in line with other tour operators and global suppliers today. See website for details
Travel Insurance– While travel insurance is optional, in today’s world we highly encourage you to get standard coverage to cover trip interruption and cancellation. Best source for all is www.insuremytrip.com. CFAR or cancel for any reason covers Covid but is expensive. Note that no company covers for fear.
Preexisting conditions – If you would like the security of travel insurance and have a pre-existing condition (elderly parent, medical, etc.), you must purchase insurance within 15 days from your initial trip deposit in order to assure full coverage. The trip cost can be amended or adjusted as needed after your initial purchase (eg. like adding an air ticket cost later). You can buy travel insurance at any time, just know that there may be some possible limitations if purchased outside the 15 day period. We like TravelSafe, Allianz or Seven Corners.

AFS Group Etiquette – Prepare for your departure joyfully with no contempt before investigation upon arrival. Please understand that with travel, things are not like at home and changes may occur. Great trips work best for those with an open mind, flexible attitude and adventuresome spirit. If changes occur, embrace them with serendipity. Who knows?… The unexpected may prove to be a better experience. Adapt and go with the flow with a laid-back attitude. Be spontaneous. Be tolerant of foreign cultures in respecting their centuries of traditions. Embrace the differences. Be curious, not shy. Smile – locals will sense your energy of kindness and kindness always begets kindness. Our common goal is to experience different cultures, make new friends, get great photos, have large fun, and return home safely with memories worthy of recollection.
10 Commandments for AFS Travelers
- Thou shall not expect to find things as thou hast at home, for thou hast left thy home to find things different.
- Thou shall not take anything too seriously.A carefree mind is the beginning of a fun vacation.
- Thou shall not let other group members get on thy nerves, for thou art paying good money to enjoy thyself.
- Thou shall not forget that doist represent America (Canada too) at all times. Kindness begets kindness, ugliness begets ugliness.
- Thou shall not worry. This is for thine AFS trip leader. They who worry hath no pleasure, and few things are fatal.
- Remember thy passport at all times. A person without a passport is a person without a country.
- Blessed is the person who can say “thank you” in any language
- When in Rome, do as the Romans do
- Do not judge the people of a foreign land by one person with whom thou hast had trouble.
- Remember, thou art a guest in each land. They who treateth their host with respect shall be treated as a guest of honor.
Please note that AFS is non-partisan – With our homogeneous groups, we all want to focus on the common denominator – our love of travel. In today’s divisive world, we suggest members not discuss politics and if you must, please practice my rule of TOK: Tolerance, Open-mindedness and Kindness.
Please be advised that the operation of some tours may need to be rearranged or modified to suit local conditions, but all activities stated will be included. We are here for you to address any questions about your trip. In time, we believe travel will begin to normalize with less rules and we appreciate your cooperation until then. Now more than ever before, travelers value the privilege of travel to explore our world. You’ve been waiting so long, it’s time for recess!
