Wild Zambia & Magical Malawi

Come see unfiltered Africa as never before on our New AFS thrilling safari into two different worlds teeming with wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. Both countries from Lilongwe, South Luangwa NP, Mfewe to Nakoma Island are heaven for photographers.   Our Afriholics have been to Zambia, but it’s our first trip deep into the premiere game reserve of South Luangwa, Africa’s best-kept secret with intense game viewing.  This untamed park is the birthplace of the Walking Safari which you’ll love.

The bush is busy here. With few safari jeeps and tourists, you’ll watch the Discovery Channel come to life! This national park is the best place for leopard spotting. But it’s not just big cats. Herds of elephant, giraffe, zebra, Cape buffalo, hyena, wildebeest, monkeys, baboons, hippos and more, where packs of wild dogs roam.  It’s a David Livingstone Zambezi dream. You’ll love our beautiful lodge with its Photohide with all meals and game drives included. In your chalet, listen to a lullaby sung by lions each night.

On to stunning Malawi, named “Warm Heart of Africa” for the genuine warmth of the Malawian people. Here’s the land of lakes, landscapes, wildlife and vibrant culture with sunsets one of a kind! This little country is crowned by the expansive “Lake of Stars” that creates a symphony of earth and sky. Without tide, it forms a perfect mirrored reflection of twinkling stars. Lake Malawi, declared a UNESCO site in 1984 for protected marine life, is home to the rarest freshwater fish and aquatic bird life on the planet.  Enjoy boat cruises, snorkeling, scuba and kayaking the clearest waters. On land walk among the baobabs and fig trees. Our last group loved this country.  Malawi is trending now as Africa’s best Glamping destination. You’ll love our country lodge and our chalet tents on our own private Blue Zebra Island!  Serenity and silence, except for the cry of the fish eagles – this is paradise for nature lovers.

Air is easy round trip to Malawi and our low price can’t be matched. This small group is perfect for our Africa lovers to forge new memories with like-minded explorers, together navigating these untrodden paths. Come write your own vivid story of discovery in two of Africa’s hidden gems.

What makes Malawi extraordinary:  This little nation is famously hospitable and brings a kaleidoscope of natural sites. Malawi’s share of the Great Rift Valley makes it a must-see eco destination with its dramatic landscapes. Africans vacation here for its wealth of outdoor activities

Lake Malawi National Park was the very first freshwater national park declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984 protecting over 350 species of cyclid fish ( those beautiful colored ones you find in most aquariums). This NP is found in the south of the lake near Cape Maclear and is only 94km2 of the whole lake.

  • Also fondly known as “ The Calendar Lake “ (because it is approximately 365 km long and about 52 km wide ) and the “Lake of Stars” as the sun sets you see hundreds of little lights from the fishing boats.
  • Lake Malawi takes up 1/3 of the country of Malawi
  • Listen to the incredible cries of the African fish eagle
  • Watch the otters playing close to shore
  • Walk under the massive baobabs
  • Incredible diving and snorkeling

May 3-7 –  South Luangwa National Park

Today we are crossing the border to the wildlife haven of Zambia, which is approximately a 5-hour journey (not including border crossing time). The best part is that no visa is required. Zambia is unique because:  Bordering the Luangwa River, north and south national parks contain some of the most breathtaking and untouched wilderness in Africa. As a result of this and the parks successful anti-poaching campaigns, the area developed into a world renowned wildlife haven.
– It is an unspoiled landlocked country that is home to 20 national parks and 34 game management areas.
– South Luangwa is also known as the Valley of Leopards, and experts believe that there are at least 3 leopards per km2 in the area.
– The park isn’t just rich in big cats; the rare wild dogs are more difficult to spot, but there are multiple packs in the park (sometimes with up to 40 members).
– By getting close to the river, you can spot a variety of wildlife, including crocodiles and hippos (an estimated 50 hippos per km of river).
– South Luangwa is also a dream for birders, since more than 450 species visit the park each year, and you can see up to 100 species in one day.
– Zambia is best known for its incredible walking guides and is considered home to the walking safari.

Check into our fabulous lodge for 4 nights located in the heart of Zambia’s best game reserve.  Rangers will brief all on the daily activities here…

Bush Walks– South Luangwa is the birthplace of the Walking Safari. Bush walks bring another dimension to a safari, focusing on smaller things, birds and flora while observing animals as well. Bush Walks aren’t strenuous but can take place over rugged terrain usually lasting 3 to 4 hours. Qualified guides and escort scouts accompany you as you get up close and personal to life in the bush.

Morning and afternoon Game Drives –  Join our game drives into the South Luangwa National Park twice a day. Our safari vehicles are equipped with a shade roof and have 3 rows with a maximum of 6 guests per vehicle. During the peak season (April to October), game drives access the park directly at Kafunta’s pontoon.  Early evening during the game drive, we stop for sundowners and continue into a night drive using spotlights to spot smaller nocturnal animals and big predators on the hunt.

Photographic Hide – The hide is set up right under the dining deck and is facing the floodplains and lagoon where many waterbirds including fish eagles and saddle-billed storks are often seen, along with elephants, giraffes and more.

Cultural Visits – Kafunta Safaris highly recommend a visit to the village of Mfuwe where Project Luangwa has a visitor center where one can learn about the many projects benefiting local education and communities, there is also a café and a craftshop. We can also do a side trip to the Mulberry Mongoose jewelry workshop and to the iconic Tribal Textiles factory and shop and its Artisan market. In Central Mfuwe there is also the Conservation South Luangwa visitor center to learn more about conservation efforts.

The Chipembele Wildlife Educational Center only 20 minutes away from Kafunta River Lodge.

Infinity Pool, Natural Hot Tub, Wellness Spa, Gym –  Kafunta River Lodge features a small intimate spa with an array of relaxing treatments performed by an on-site therapist. Enjoying the infinity pool, the natural hot tub and booking a massage at the spa are a perfect way to spend the midday hours between game-viewing activities. There is also a small gym with a selection of equipment and treadmills/bikes.

Dining- All meals and drinks are included.Kafunta serves a light breakfast before the game drive and cooked breakfast after, followed by a buffet lunch later in the day. Dinner is a four-course affair served on the main deck with direct view of the flood plains!

Kafunta River Lodge – 4 nts, All inclusive

The 12-room lodge is located on the floodplains of the Luangwa River, away from the busier area near the park’s Mfuwe gate.  Central to the lodge is a spacious bar and dining area. Built around a semi-evergreen wild mango tree and thatched in the traditional style, it offers superb panoramic views over the Luangwa River and the South Luangwa National Park. Great game viewing and bird watching from the lodge is guaranteed.  Adjacent to the bar is a refreshing infinity pool and the only natural hot spring tub in the Luangwa Valley. This unique hot tub is fed from a source on Kafunta’s grounds, offering a constant temperature of 38 degrees. Here you can enjoy pure relaxation while being presented with magnificent views over the flood plains and the Luangwa River.

May 7-10    Transfer to Southern Malawi

(Please note overland transfer is around six hours. It’s a very scenic drive with stops added. A flight would take over four hours with airport transfer and check-in and significantly increase the trip cost.)

Blue Zebra Island Lodge, Nankoma Island

Nankoma Island is part of the Marelli Archipelago in southern Lake Malawi, where the waters are particularly rich in exotic tropical fish.  Swimming and snorkeling with them is an amazing experience as they flash by in iridescent shades. Incredible birdlife is also evident on the island, with species such as hornbills, kingfishers, paradise flycatchers and owls, and cormorants and storks inhabiting the lake shore.
Blue Zebra is a conservation-driven lodge located near the islands of Nankoma, Maleri, and Nakantenga. The lodge operates exclusively on solar power and offers eco-friendly, yet first-class accommodations, including 10 en-suite safari-style tented chalets and 1 Superior Cottage overlooking Lake Malawi. It’s fine Glamping on this world famous lake.

Guests can enjoy nature-based activities, including nature trails, birding, kayaking, snorkeling, and water-sports, boating as well as a sunset cruise. Those seeking relaxation can enjoy the infinity pool or spa, while foodies can indulge in delicious meals at the cocktail bar or restaurant. With its close proximity to Lilongwe and various Malawi wildlife parks, Blue Zebra is the perfect getaway for nature lovers seeking a unique and sustainable travel experience.

Nature Trails

Explore the wonderfully wild paths around and over Nankoma Island & connect with nature. The further you go the smaller you feel as you walk among massive Baobab trees. Venture off track to The Ancient Fig for a halfway break and soak in the enchanting natural beauty of this unspoiled paradise.  The main trail around the island is only 2.3km. Enjoy the thriving birdlife, look out for the elusive Red Duiker along the top path, Chameleons camouflaged in in trees, and Monitor Lizards along the shore.  Early birds will catch a stunning sunrise!

Kayaking

Explore the Marelli Archipelago by kayak –  a great way to get out and explore the coves and coastal wildlife up close.  It takes around 45min-1hr around Nankoma Island, but for the more active and adventurous you can kayak all 3 islands in around 2.5 – 3 hours.  For a shorter kayak, there are rocky outcrops close to shore. Paddle around and spot all the different kinds of colorful fish. Other possible sightings: otters, monitor lizards, bird life (especially Cormorants and African Fish-Eagles).

Snorkeling

Rarely does one have such effortless and immediate access to a site teaming with aquatic life. Just a few meters off the shore, experience Malawi’s renowned Cichlids. Famed for their vivid and vibrant colors, the Islands are home to species unique not only to Lake Malawi but many to these islands. Look out for the Blue Zebra!  The best sites depend on lake levels and the time of year. Snorkel equipment is free to use for off-shore snorkeling. (At an additional charge, snorkel trips can be arranged to Maleri and/or Nakantenga Islands.  There’s an on-site PADI water sports center with free use of gear. Scuba diving and fishing can also be arranged at an additional charge.)

Boat Cruises

Cruise around the Marelli islands and experience an awe inspiring Lake Malawi sunset out on the water – MGT (Malawi Gin & Tonic) or your sundowner of choice in hand. Every sunset is different & it’s always an unforgettable event as the sun gently dips below the low-lying Nkhotakota hills in the distance.

Birding

Malawi is world renowned as a birdwatchers paradise. The country boasts over 650 different species of birds, 10% of which are native species non-existent anywhere else on the globe.  Lake Malawi provides an ideal habitat for bird life has the highest concentration of African Fish Eagles on the continent. Their cry is heard frequently echoing across the skies over Nankoma Island.  There are over 350 species at the islands – best seen in the dry season. Take a bird check-list around the island and tick of how many you see.

Chill out at the Infinity Pool

With stunning views over Lake Malawi, what better way to spend an afternoon than splash about in the pool or laze on the deck chairs.  This is your time to chill.

Spa

Pamper yourself with spa treatment surrounded by the calming sounds of nature, set under a giant fig tree with views across Lake Malawi.

Yoga Retreats – Yoga weekends provide guided practice with restorative immersion in nature.

Malawi-Zambia trip tips 2024

Prepare to be thrilled by our new Africa adventure. From the valley of leopards to the lake of stars, this trip has it all! This is a safari for our true AFS afraholics. South Luangwa Valley of Zambia is the best kept secret with it’s thriving wildlife. Then to magical Malawi for the marine life, scenic nature and cultural immersion with the genuine warmth of the people.

This trip was presented October 1 and doing very well until many changed their minds later. At present, we only have 12 people booked. Small groups are great but all global suppliers base land price on group size. We need 19 total for this to go at our great price of $4170. Please post this trip link on all your social media now to help get a few more people. I know some are waiting until the end of the year but it will be far too late as our lodges must release room soon.

Trip Tips are designed to answer trip-related questions. It’s your responsibility to read this information.  Updates and addendums will be posted here.  Some travelers have lost their entire trip for not reading what we send on visas, air details, inoculations, etc.  Check back from time to time.

  • FINAL PAYMENT DUE JAN 28, 2024    Wetravel is our data management company, it allows you to pay by check electronically without a fee. Simply follow the instructions. Credit cards will be assessed a processing fee at time of purchase.  As a small business, this helps mitigate costs and allows us to give you the very best price.   If you prefer to use the mail, make your payment to AFS or Adventures For Solo Travelers, 1907 Daniel Green Ct., Smyrna GA 30080

Your fearless GTL (Gracious Trip Leader, not a guide but a liaison between our guides and group to ensure things run smoothly.)

Your GTL Janice was an early AFSer and has traveled with Suzy since almost the beginning. She has visited more than 96 countries and all 7 continents both on her own and in her job as a writer and television producer!  She has actually been to Antarctica TWICE – once with the legendary Jacques Cousteau and a second time with Prince Albert of Monaco. Imagine that. While she currently works mostly with ABC News, she spent 20 years with CNN, reporting news across the globe.

Trip Prep:

  • Read the revised Heading Abroad with AFS, especially if you are new to AFS.
  • Ensure your passport is valid 6 months after return date with two blank pages – these are Visa pages, not addendum pages.  We recommend renewing your passport well ahead of any planned international travel. Take a photo of your passport to store in the cloud or bring a copy. If you lose your passport, US embassies now except a digital copy from your email.
  • To speed through US Customs download Mobile Passport.  Look in your App Store for details.
  • Notify bank and cc company of travel dates so they don’t block charges.
  • All airline rules differ.  It is imperative to read your airline rules on their website to ensure a smooth departure! Always check your flight before departure.

Visa Requirements: NONE – Malawi Tourist Visa is no longer required as of FEB 1st of this year!  No visa is required for Zambia

Fitness level – 2   No trouble walking as not to unnecessarily slow up the group. Being able to get in and out of safari vehicles on own is important. Know your limits.

General Air Info –  Consider flying in early to ensure you’ll be there once trip begins.   Always download and use your airlines app! Use app to track your booking, delays, bags, to show boarding pass and to contact them. If you have a flight problem go to the airline’s website “contact us” page or reach them by text, social media, Skype or call their international number.  Also, premium credit cards often offer many air perks, assistance, insurance, lounge passes, global entry and more. Read more at www.tpg.com for best cards.  Many say they want to fly business class but don’t realize fare range from 4K to 9K. We do have two good contacts that can get the sea seats at nearly half cost. Alen@skylux.com or ali@business–class.com. Tell them Suzy sent you.

Important Air Dates May 1 – 10 (Land begins May 2)

Group Air:  None as we will not meet the minimum required to make a group booking since this is a small group. See below on how to do your own air which gives you more flexibility.

Doing Own Air Round trip USA to Malawi May 1 or earlier to May 10.   (Sometimes we offer group air but find few people book sometimes find better rates on own direct from hometown.  This provides you better flexibility to go early or extend at trip end.   Also, you can consider upgrading seat to business class but know prices average 6 to 9K. No group air tickets can be upgraded. (see below).   We recommend you now book flexible air tickets that can be refunded or changed.)  Best to fly either Kenya or Ethiopia Airways.  Land starts May 2.

A good connecting airline is Kenya airways – this is also currently the cheapest.  Kenya Airways example schedule:

KQ 003 01 May JFK NBO 12:45PM 1030+1 (next day May 2)
KQ 756 02 May NBO LLW 1220PM 1:35PM

KQ 756 10 May LLW NBO 2:25PM  8:00 PM
KQ 002 10 May NBO JFK 11:35PM 0635 AM (next day May 11)

The above flight departs on 30 April as well for those wanting to fly in a day earlier.

Your GTL Janice found a great fare from USA via Johannesburg. From there, she booked Airlink flights round trip to LLW.  Airlink is now a very reliable airline to consider.

Ethiopian Airlines is also a good option and a member of Star Alliance. There are now daily connections from Johannesburg into Lilongwe which means those wanting to fly directly in to Johannesburg on United or Delta can do this and then connect to Lilongwe. Good opportunity to do an add on to South Africa.

We like Google Flights.  3rd-party booking engines like Expedia, make it easy to book, but it is nearly impossible to handle air problems.  Buy direct from airline or pay a travel agent to ticket you.  If you need help, our wonderful Africa supplier over 30 years is Nicki. She can ticket you. Contact her at nicki@africanspiral.com

Airport Transfers-  Once we get all your air schedules, will set up one common group airport pick up based on majority of flight times.  (With travelers arriving and departing on different days and times, it is insurmountable to manage. Group air airport transfers are based on set time. Without group air, there can no longer be any pick-ups or drop-offs.  Unfortunately, now like other tour companies, transfers are your responsibility. (We’ve spent weeks each trip making spreadsheets of each person’s air to send to the supplier and then flights change. We then hire a guide, driver and pay airport parking fees. Last year in groups only half showed up as guides waited hours looking for others. Sometimes no AFSers showed up without informing us.) Transfers are not expensive. Email our first hotel Kumbali County Lodge kumbali@kumbali.com and inquire about a transfer.   Connect on group Facebook page to set up sharing transfer cost if you like.  If you go early and check-in AFS hotel before group arrives, it’s your responsibility to change rooms with your roommate if necessary day one when trip begins.

Meet Up With Group- On May 2, a time will be set to meet the group at the hotel for a briefing. More on this later.

Baggage– Think light to ease your burden, not like you’re fleeing your homeland.  You change hotel properties several times. 1 carry-on bag & 1 medium suitcase not to exceed 45lb checked bag – weigh on a bathroom scale.  If you overpack by adding pre-or post-trip luggage, make prior plans as to where to stow the excess luggage. You may be responsible for any overage charges. Apple AirTags work great to track checked bags when the airline cannot, also good for carry-on.   Leave space for great souvenirs. Be sure to attach ID inside and out of carry-on and checked bag.

Packing-  Google weather a week prior departure – May is peak season here and best time to go.  Temperatures in both South Luangwa and Lake Malawi are temperate with temperatures between 60 and 82F

This trip is so easy and casual throughout. Simply pack spring/summer clothing with a light jacket for nights and long flights.  Umbrella, hat, swimsuit, rain jacket, water bottle, fleece for game drives that can be cool in the morning, comfy sneakers, all hotels have hair dryers.   The game drives go out in the early mornings and evenings as this is when the game is most active. The vehicles are open vehicles and it can be very cold. The trick here is to layer your clothes as it will warm up as the sun comes up. Bring a jacket. They do provide blankets and rain ponchos if needed.

Most important things: sunscreen ( factor 40+), hat, sunglasses, plug adaptor, cell charger, small daypack for carrying all your things on game drives.

Cool travel hacks from our AFSers! Pack overnight outfit in your carry-on, liquid IV packets to hydrate, use packing cubes, downy wrinkle spray, Apple AirTags, extra nylon bag to check laundry home, tons of US dollars for extra tips, fully charged travel banks, less is more, get global entry.
Read Packing 101 in Heading Abroad with AFS

Electric– Don’t forget a portable backup charger, cords, gadgets, etc. Cell phones and tablets do not need a converter; you only need an adapter plug.  AFSers often leave charger cords in room, so be sure to double-check your room before check out. All properties have hairdryers.  See https://www.power-plugs-sockets.com  Types C, D & G

Money Matters – Always bring some cash!  You will need some cash for personal tipping, meals, and shopping. $300 cash should suffice.    Change currency on arrival at airport, bank, or hotels or withdraw local currency from an ATM.  Note -independent ATMs are risky due to skimmer scams. Safest ATMs are at airport and banks. Always shield your pin number when entering.  Bring newer bills 2016 on as some countries won’t take old or slightly damaged bills.

Master Card and Visa widely accepted.  Amex rarely accepted.   Credit cards are far safer than using your debit card. I use my credit card for most purchases.  Many cards now offer no foreign transaction fees. (Some countries in Africa and Asia require new bills dated after 2016. Older bills not accepted when changing money.) The US dollar is stronger.   By law all payments within Zambia can only be made in kwachas but many shops, hotels, lodges and restaurants that cater to travelers or foreigners will accept US dollars (you may receive your change in kwachas so keep the exchange rate in mind so ensure you get the correct value).

Currency  Exchange Rate  $1= 22  Zambian Kwacha and 1114 Malawian Kwacha

Gratuities –  It’s protocol to tip our local guides, assistants, porters, wait staff, drivers and ground staff. Guidelines have increased globally. A $130 total will be added to your invoice.  Please understand this is only the suggested minimum.  For ease of distribution, your GTL will tip the different ground services for the entire group each day.

Tipping on own – If service is stellar, feel free to give more directly.  All we tourists leave behind is our reputation. I carry a stash of US ones in an envelope to draw from as needed. Porters – AFSers roll bags to their room.  If you use a porter, please tip.  For group lunches or dinners included, please leave $2 for waitstaff!

—————————————————————————————-

Communication– Internet is available. With smartphones, be sure to check with your provider for rates and coverage for international phone plans before departure. Data Roaming rates can be expensive. To reach home – Texting, iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook messaging when using WIFI. Be cautious using public Wi-Fi without using VPN. Without VPN never open attachments or view financial or personal accounts on the Internet while abroad.  Phone calls, text messages, and data usage of all kinds, it is crucial to understand that, unless you are connected to Wi-Fi, every use of your phone incurs a data toll. That means that viewing and downloading email, browsing the web, viewing social media, and mapping all incur data charges, as do applications that we sometimes assume to be “free,” such as Skype and WhatsApp. Unless you are connected to Wi-Fi, however, WhatsApp is using cellular data, so you are getting charged at your provider’s international roaming data rate.  Facebook Messenger Phone is an easy free way to make calls.

Get Smart: Avoiding Hackers on Vacation.  Thieves not only want your money but also your data.    Change passwords often. Check device security settings before you leave for your trip. Back up, update, and encrypt your devices and data using a virtual VPN. Since 1989, your safety is our primary concern. Our local teams are experts, constantly monitoring any issues with your destinations. They can access real-time safety issues and will keep us informed if necessary.

  • Bottled water is always best abroad, as our gut isn’t accustomed to local tap water.  Stay hydrated.
  • Travel health – Drink bottled water. Avoid street foods. Bring Imodium or anti-diarrhea medicine.  Bring sunscreen.  Load up on antioxidants like vitamin C to zinc.

Health –  All our meals are pure and water is filtered. Bottled water provided throughout. Don’t use ice outside hotels. (Poverty – you may witness an eyeful of poverty omnipresent. The beauty is found in its humanity with dignity inherent in the spirit of the people here who possess virtues of simplicity, hard work, gentleness and perseverance. No beggars will harass you. Humbling to see them so happy with so little.) Malaria – please consult your doctor about malaria pills. No shots are needed.

Photography – Before taking pictures of locals, know it is polite to ask.  Your AFS Private Facebook Group Page is a great way to share your best shots with each other. AFS loves photos with group participants (not typical churches, monuments, or any shot that looks like you pulled it off of the net, etc.) for our website. The best photos are ones that include a group member with a local, children, animals, or at iconic sites in the same frame! Note, there may be some restrictions with photos in Buddhist places and religious sites. Guide will advise.

Accommodations – Kumbali Lodge, Kafunda Lodge, Blue Zebra Lodge.  Our itinerary has links to each hotel.  Note that hotels can change, but it’s rare.

Roommates –  Single supplements have significantly increased in price– if available at all.  Save money and buy yourself an awesome local gift. We all live alone, but save money when traveling by rooming together. Suzy spends a lot of time on roommate matching.  99% of our clients are wonderful and you’re only in your room to sleep at night.   The best option is to invite a friend.  Note, kindness begets kindness.  Many of our seasoned travelers bring headsets to drown out any excess noise.  We share rooms only to sleep at night.  (please understand if the AFS room list ends up with unbalanced gender and forces a single room, we will offer it to all in group or share the added cost. If none want it, if you were the last to book, we may have to remove you from the trip.)

Leisure Time –  For your free time, it’s best to arrive and ask our local expert guides for suggestions.  We notice many newer clients pre-plan many activities on the AFS trip well before they arrive, often with disappointing results.  Our daily itineraries are pretty full, but there will be some free time. Expert travelers revel in the element of surprise in a new destination and allow the wind to blow them where it will. Use Google Maps on your phone to find everything nearby.

Amending tour pre-or post-trip. We honor your independent spirit, but encourage you to extend more days at the trip’s end when you’re acclimated well to the destination.  If you add another country, we often see many AFSers on Facebook urging others to join them what do you consider the cost of tours, transport, hotels, etc.  Stopovers are great to add, but understand AFS has no responsibility for the quality of your trip.

Private Facebook Group Page  –  The benefit of the Private FB Group Page is that you have an opportunity to introduce yourself to your fellow travelers before departure and share trip photos during and after the tour.  The link can be found in your Wetravel welcome letter after your initial deposit.  (We found that some never read the Trip Tips jumping right to the Private FB Group Page assuming they will get all trip info needed. Often, they only receive rumors or misinformation. All important information is ALWAYS emailed to each participant and posted in Trip Tips under UPDATES. Nobody misses a thing.)

Emergency Contact – AFS phone or text 770-432-8225, or email us at https://www.afstravelers.com/contact-us/    More contacts will be provided with your Final Docs email 2 to 3 weeks before departure. Your guide can handle a call home for a true emergency. Do not expect to use your trip leader’s cell phone; you’ll need to use your own.

Cancellation Penalty –  At booking, we sent you our terms and conditions. Click here for our Terms & Conditions  and here for Cancellation refund policy   In part it states “a written request for cancellation through email or text with your name and cancellation specifics to 770-432-8225. Please be aware that when a refund is due, a $155 administrative fee will be charged for each cancellation. Any cancellation after November 28, 2023 there are no there are no refunds for any cancellation after November 28, 2023 refunds.

Travel Insurance– While travel insurance is optional, in today’s world, we highly encourage you to get standard coverage to cover trip interruption and cancellation.  Best source for all is www.insuremytrip.com.   CFAR or cancel for any reason covers Covid but is expensive.  Note that no company covers cancellation due to fear.

Preexisting conditions – If you would like the security of travel insurance and have a pre-existing condition (elderly parent, medical, etc.), you must purchase insurance within 15 days from your initial trip deposit in order to assure full coverage.  The trip cost can be amended or adjusted as needed after your initial purchase (eg. like adding an air ticket cost later). You can buy travel insurance at any time, just know that there may be some possible limitations if purchased outside the 15 day period.  We like TravelSafe, Allianz or Seven Corners.

Travel Psychology 101  – Prepare for your departure joyfully with no contempt before investigation upon arrival. Please understand that with travel, things are not like at home and changes may occur. Great trips work best for those with an open mind, flexible attitude and adventuresome spirit.  If changes occur, embrace them with serendipity. Who knows?… The unexpected may prove to be a better experience.  Adapt and go with the flow with a laid-back attitude.  Be spontaneous. Be tolerant of foreign cultures in respecting their centuries of traditions. Embrace the differences. Be curious, not shy. Smile – locals will sense your energy of kindness and kindness always begets kindness.  Our common goal is to experience different cultures, make new friends, get great photos, have large fun, and return home safely with memories worthy of recollection.

The best spirit of an Explorer requires the openness of a child – Suzy

“When traveling, remember that a foreign country isn’t designed to make you comfortable.  It’s designed to make its own people comfortable.” – Clinton Fadiman

Please note that AFS is non-partisan – With our homogeneous groups, we all want to focus on the common denominator – our love of travel.  In today’s divisive world, we suggest members not discuss politics and if you must, please practice my rule of TOK:  Tolerance, Open-mindedness and Kindness.

Please be advised that the operation of some tours may need to be rearranged or modified to suit local conditions, but all activities stated will be included.  We are here for you to address any questions about your trip. In time, we believe travel will begin to normalize with less rules and we appreciate your cooperation until then.  Now more than ever before, travelers value the privilege of travel to explore our world. You’ve been waiting so long, it’s time for recess!

Suzy’s Africa Travel Tips

Visa Requirements: Malawi Tourist Visa –  E-Visa to be obtained prior to arrival in Malawi  – they are looking at doing away with visa’s totally for USA by 2024, but not yet – $50.  Closer to their time of travel we will provide them with a visa support letter for their online Malawi Visa application. Please see the link to the Malawi Visa application page here.

Doing Own Air– Sometimes we offer group air but find few people book sometimes find better rates on own direct from hometown.  This provides you better flexibility to go early or extend at trip end.   Also, you can consider upgrading seat to business class but know prices average 6 to 9K. No group air tickets can be upgraded. (see below).   We recommend you now book flexible air tickets that can be refunded or changed.  Best to fly either Kenya or Ethiopia Airways.

Best connecting airline is Kenya airways – this is also currently the cheapest.

Kenya Airways example schedule:

KQ 003 01 May JFK  NBO  1245    1030+1 (May 2)

KQ 756 02 May NBO LLW   1220+1  1335+1

KQ 756  10 May LLW   NBO  1425    2000  KQ 002  10 May NBO JFK   2335    0635+1

The above flight departs on 30 April as well for those wanting to fly in a day earlier.

You can buy travel insurance at any time, just know that there may be some possible limitations if purchased outside the 15 day period.  We like TravelSafe, Allianz or Seven Corners.

General Stuff

“The only man I envy is the man who has not yet been to Africa. For he has so much to look forward to.”

“Africa changes you-forever, like nowhere else. How can you describe its magic? How can you explain the fascination of the past and noble dusty continent, who’s oldest roads are elephant paths? How are experiences here in a way no other place can? Maybe it’s because Africa is the place of all our beginnings, the cradle of mankind. The happiest years of my life were spent here.”    Paul Theroux

Some travelers who’ve never been to Africa think a safari is non-stop action.  Behold the stunning boredom!  The fact is there’s a lot of glorious down time between early morning and evening game drives.  Time in the bush is like entering a remnant of an earlier era.  Everything slows down.  Shade seeking lions flop over like house cats, zebras stand still as statues, leopards drape over branches to sleep.  All game rests.  With them, we engage in communion of laziness.  We relax.  We observe.

Wildlife Encounters – All animals are wild and you are prey. Respect proximity. Wild animals are totally unpredictable. If you ever encounter a predator in the bush-never run! You will always be the slowest. Animals may roam into lodge camp. Never deviate off path or walk alone at night. Guards will escort you. Never walk near a river bank or swim in lakes. Hippos hide well.

Game Drives – You will be devided in 6-7 per safari vehicle.  Do not interfere with or direct your expert rangers – guide who lived there.  He’s far more than a driver with years of experience and intense certifications. Your safety is their number one concern. They can spot everything from ground to sky.   Suggested tip is $3 to 5 per game drive. If several days of drives, wait until the end.

Animal sightings are not guaranteed. AFS past groups have been extremely successful on all. Over 3 decades, we never had a bad safari. Big cats are usually present, but leopards and cheetahs tend to hide. Don’t just search out the big mammals. You’ll miss the marvels of small creatures like badgers to bush babies and spectacular bird life.

Photography-   Rather than hauling big lenses, small digital cameras get incredible shots nowadays.   Bring large memory card.  Then edit/delete each night. On drives, keep camera in the bag to protect it from dust and sun.   Don’t forget extra batteries! Best light on safaris is 6 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM.   Rangers will assist for best vantage points. There is usually a pair of binoculars to share in jeep. Always get consent before photographing local people.

On return home, share your pics on AFS private Facebook page or use Shutterfly.com.  (I have over 8000 photos of elephants and lions. Please take human photos as well as wildlife. Better yet, take photos AFS humans with the wildlife.)

Expert Africa Packing: Bring only soft sided luggage. No hard cases can fit in Safari vehicles. If we use small charter aircraft deep into bush like Botswana, I’ll advise of strict weight restrictions for both bag and carry-on.   Pack light and wear the same clothes more than once. Laundry is always available.

Neutral colored clothing (no bright colors or fragrances to alarm animals.)   light cotton shorts and T-shirts by day. Jeans/pants with a long sleeve tops at night. Early-morning drives always cold-bring warm jacket, fleece or sweater.   Smart outfit for evening functions.

Hat with a brim for sun protection and chinstrap for drives.   Bring simple light day pack on drives. Sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent with DEET, swimsuit, adapter plugs, mini flashlight, toiletries.

Lodges or Camps –  All first-class properties or “glamping” style tents.   All food and water is purified. If water is not, guide will advise.  Cover bathroom sink with washcloth as a reminder not to use. Bottled water in the rooms and always available daily. Hydrate! African air is dry and sun is strong.

Lodges have a staff tip box. $5 to $10 is generous to give and will be shared with all staff.

Ask reception for charging station to plug-in phones, cameras and tablets.

THE BIG FIVE ANIMALS TO SEE ON SAFARI

Be mindful of everything around you, not just the Big 5.   I’m a primate girl myself.  In times gone by European hunters used to search out for the most difficult to hunt animals in Africa which led Safari club supreme a list of five key animals that were challenged to shoot. These were considered difficult for a number of reasons, including ferocity, visibility, and elusiveness.

Lions really are the kings of the savanna and are at the top of the food chain. As such, they need no introduction. Lions are widespread throughout southern and eastern Africa and you’ll have a good chance of seeing them in most safari locations.

Black Rhino now critically endangered, the black rhino is not actually black, but more off-white. Despite its huge bulk and dangerous reputation, rhinos are herbivores who would rather graze on some grass than attack a person. There are a few rhinos left in a wild due to large increase in poachers hunting them for their horns.

Leopards are nocturnal and secretive, making them the most difficult number of the Big 5  to actually spot. When you do see one, chances are it will be lounging in a tree at sunset having just eaten dinner.

African Elephants as most people know are large thick-skinned herbivores. Elephants are numerous in Africa but nevertheless can be hard to spot in some areas due to their ability to hide in the bush and long grasses. Despite being widespread, elephants face a growing threat from poachers who hunt them for their ivory.

Cape Buffalo considered by many to be the most dangerous of the big five, reportedly causing the most hunter deaths, with wounded animals reported to ambush and attack pursuers.

Meds:  Anti-malaria pills may be recomme. Ask your health care provider. Sometimes a Yellow Fever shot is recommended. You get it county health clinic and it’s good for lifetime.  Our groups never had any problems with mosquitoes in two decades of trips to Africa.  Phone me direct if you have specific questions 770-432-8225

About Anti-malaria drugs

This is a common question from our travelers to parts of Africa and So. America.  It is a serious disease that can happen when being bitten by an infected female mosquito.  However, it’s extremely rare.  While locals, tourism staff and guides there do not take pills, many travelers prefer to play it safe with either weekly or daily pills which starts week before your arrival.

In the US, we are limited to only 3 choices; Malarone, Doxycycline or Atovaquone (Larium). Malarone can be costly, but now there’s a generic.  Wal-Mart or Kroger have the best prices.  See your doctor for a prescription.  Sometimes one only needs a strong DEET repellent (roll-on best) and wearing pants and long sleeves at dusk.

Some clients go to CDC website which prepares all for the worst and creates unnecessary fear.  We only stay in fine properties with clean food and water.  We do not use needles, swim in rivers, work with the sick or have sex with locals.

I don’t want you to over immunize yourself sick, spending hundreds for unnecessary dollars.  Over 2 decades selling Africa and South America, no AFS client has ever contracted any disease.  Ultimately, it’s your decision on what’s best for you.

Travelers diarrhea can happen anywhere outside USA.  It can be caused from the stress of travel, different diets and water that is contaminated.  However, all lodge meals are hygienic clean meals.  (Cause of infection may be virus, parasitic or bacterial, so don’t think Cipro is a cure all.)  You all know not to drink untreated tap water, use ice cubes.  It is contagious so be scrupulous with washing your hands and using clean towel to dry.  And not to brush teeth with it.

If you get sick, rehydrate with oral rehydration salts, take Imodium or Lomatil.  If it doesn’t pass in a week, see doctor. Don’t reach for ‘’stoppers’’ right away. Allow toxins to pass. Fluids are essential.

Things for Children –  Bring anything as all we be used.  Think Dollar Store of Target.  Some store will even donate.  (Get creative.  I bring hair scrunchies and mirrors for girls and balloons for kids.). I poor places school supplied can be useless with no paper to draw on.  The need shoes, socks, cloths. The love caps, toys and inflatable balls.  You can always donate cash to the headmaster or visit Packwithapurpose.com to see who needs what in each country.

African Jewelry –  Many AFS women long for a piece to treasure their safaris like a Big 5 ring, bracelet or pendant.  The best beyond any store is Kim in Capetown. See her website and say Suzy sent you.  KimCloeteDesign.co.za
